Sighing, she lifted her glass to sip on her wine and let her mind wander. A carnal desire reared its head in her tedium seemingly out of nowhere. Warmth spread through her body, and there was a tugging at her gut. A stirring that made it a bit harder to breathe, impossible to stand still. Like a strange kind of drunkenness. She inspected her wine with furrowed brows.
“You have the power of a deity on your side. You’re not nearly as charming as you think you are.”
But it was only Sebastian, who was somehow able to find them.
Then she shoved it, wrapped in one of her shirts, along with the marker and the book to the bottom of her travel bag that had already been packed with her things from her hotel room by Adrien.
One last time, she told herself, one last time. Sought that connection. That lapse. Some peace. A comfort. But she couldn’t find anything at the other end. No one. Just emptiness. Just alone.
“And why not?” Ameera asked with a challenging lift of her brows. She allowed Isla to stew in her silence for a few heartbeats before she loosened a breath. “I mean, I know you don’t want to be our luna and all, but is it so horrible to help defend us?”
Isla suddenly felt Jonah’s presence behind her and heard him let out a resigned, defeated breath. “You two better not fuck on my floor.”
“He seems like a bit of an asshole. But then again, you said that was your type.” Isla glared, saying pointedly, “And it’s also all I’m destined for, apparently.”
“I know that every day, it becomes more and more apparent that my enemy is the family of the woman I love and that I’m running out of time with her.”
“Kai told me he loves me,” Isla blurted out causing Rhydian’s brows to shoot upwards again. “And if I don’t talk to someone about it, I’m going to lose my mind, and I can’t guarantee Magnus makes it off this peak alive.” Rhydian snickered. “About time he admitted it.”
Her insides turned watery.
Behind him, Ameera was pouring a sizable glass of liquor.
“My rule stands!” she heard Jonah yell from the street. “What rule?”
Maybe Isla could give him a little push. Literally. “He’d love to.” Isla nudged him forward, and Adrien tripped just enough that he had to brace his hand on the woman’s arm. Something behind her stare flashed, and she shivered before her eyes flicked briefly between Isla and then Kai.
You will lose everything in this war, and he is the reason.
They’re trying to stop him…trying, but they’ll fail. They always fail…it can only be us. It’s only ever been us.
“Dad, you have to put me down,” Isla grumbled but couldn’t hold back a smile. “You’re embarrassing me.” Malakai let out a staccato sound of apology and obliged, but not before giving her one last squeeze. He nodded to everyone on Io and Deimos’s sides before bowing deeper to both alphas. He focused on Kai in particular. “Apologies, Alpha.”
“You all locked them away like some feral abominations, slaughter them like they’re nothing. For sport, for glory. Your own brethren. While you preach family and loyalty.” She put a hand on her chest, stating with a hint of sorrow. “It wouldn’t be the first time a wolf was bastardized by magic.”
“I don’t want you dead, by the way. Same as him; it would be wasted potential. I just want to see what he’s capable of; if it’s really true. Brax’s enchantment should wear down soon if the alpha doesn’t become sick of holding himself back before then.”
greed. “And if the stars are to be trusted, I’ll need you for something else.” Rage powered Isla through her words. “I’m…going…to kill you.”
words. There was a hand on his back, and Kai whirled with a snarl that made Ezekiel stumble. Made everyone stumble. Made them cower. Made them bow. The power writhed in his gut, rising, calling him to use it again.
