“Hard censorship”—forcibly depriving someone of their living, or making their creative output disappear without any charge or trial or explanation—was a different matter entirely. It seemed so unthinkable to me that something like this could be possible and so routine in America that I figured I’d accidentally done something illegal, or broken a law without intending to.
