Niebuhr’s notion of “irony” is specific, almost technical (not of the Alanis Morissette variety). He emphasizes that our situation—the human condition—isn’t merely “pathetic.” We aren’t simply victims of history who deserve pity as passive “patients” of forces beyond our control.
