Horrified, I study the older man whose passenger seat I just highjacked when Easton’s face appears through the glass an SUV over, a ‘what the fuck’ reading clear on his lips. Shifting my gaze, I glance back at the man sitting on the driver’s side as he stares on at me expectantly.
“I want you to remember this moment. Right here, right now, just you and me in a fucking SUV, taking a drive to nowhere.” He looks at me pointedly. “Promise me you’ll remember this.”
“You just fucking fell out of the sky, didn’t you?” The cabin of the SUV clouds with energy as a surreal gravity threatens to draw us closer. “In a way,” I swallow, “I guess I did.” My mouth dries as he refuses to free me from the power of his perusal. As I opt for honesty, my heart begins to thrum harder with each passing second. “Thank you for giving me a soft place to land, Easton.”
Easton Crowne is not some budding star. He’s a supernova. He’s undoubtedly a prodigy—a genius disguised in a beautiful, but highly breakable—human package. At any time in the future, if he so desires, he will become a world-renowned star.
More than anything, I want to cling to his star as it burns the brightest—if only to be with him for a little longer. If what Easton said is true, and we live in echoes of defining moments, I want to remain in this one for as long as I possibly can.
“I’m also thinking you’ve never been properly kissed, fucked, or loved and that you caught a glimpse of something you want for yourself.”
I hate so much that Easton Crowne is the most beautiful secret I’ll ever have and will forever be the one I’m forced to keep.
I’ll never be able to wrap my head around the shock of hearing the news on the ride home before frantically scanning the radio to listen to it playing. It wasn’t just any song, either, but the one we’d made crazy, life-altering love to a few hours before. It felt like he was calling me back to him.
“You’re already mine,” I declare, knowing that’s the truth for us both.
I want to belong to Easton. I want us to exist. Again, I want what I can’t have.
“I don’t have the urge to call my friends and share my highs and lows. I don’t miss them with an ache so deeply etched inside that it keeps me awake at night, and I sure as fuck don’t drive for hours in hopes they’ll spend a few days with me. And I definitely don’t jerk off to the image of them coming on my cock. I don’t feel this way for my friends, Natalie—close or otherwise—so I dare you to call me your close friend again,” he warns. “I fucking dare you.”
“Intelligent men don’t let life-changing women pass them by without trying to grasp onto them with both hands. I don’t need endless months to figure out you’re that woman for me. I’m not most men, Natalie. I know exactly what I don’t want, and it’s everything outside of that door. What I do want is standing in front of me, and the idea of letting her walk away from me a second time is fucking eating me alive.”
“This is me fighting dirty for us both, so please just admit it so I can give you the best parts of me, because I want every fucking part of you.”
“Your dreams don’t and won’t come second to mine. I want to be the man that stands beside you or behind you when you need me to. I can and will be there for you when it matters most to you.”
“I love you, Natalie Crowne,” he rasps softly as I close my eyes before he ends the call.
“If you ever…need me,” he utters softly, “I’ll be right where you left me, okay?” He turns back toward the window as the roar in my chest intensifies.
“What took you so fucking long?” “I’m sorry,” I lick the salt from my lips. “I got lost.” “But I told you where to find me. I told you I’d be right here where you left me,” he reminds me as I shake in his hold, hope lighting up my being. “It’s not too late, Beauty,” he murmurs, “and with you, it was never going to be.”
“I love you,” he whispers, a tear gliding along his jaw. “Wholly, unconditionally, and definitively, Natalie. There’s no other woman in the world that could replace you either, Beauty. I’m the fucking fool for trying.”
