“Can you explain to him about my vision?” Hatch spoke to Palyn but did not describe the princess’ condition. “Excuse me, Captain Palyn; I need to explain something to the princess.” Palyn stopped and stepped aside so Hatch could speak to Bashalis. “My lady, allow me to explain to you how this works. As you are here to converse with Captain Palyn, it would be best if you look at him, not at me. Speak to him as if he understands you, and then I will interpret. Do you understand?” “I believe so.” She tilted her head, her expression thoughtful. “Tell him what we just talked about.” She wrinkled her nose, then looked at Palyn and smiled through her veil. “Hatch has been lecturing me about how a translated conversation is supposed to work.” Hatch translated it. Palyn’s eyes danced, basking in her smile. “And how is it supposed to work?” “I am supposed to look at you and pretend Hatch isn’t here.” “I like that idea.” And so it continued. Hatch tried to disengage his turbulent emotions and translate by rote. It was painful. It was an awkward situation to be in, regardless of one’s feelings. He interpreted as she explained her weak eyesight and as she exclaimed over the new piglets. He interpreted as Palyn complimented Bashalis’ musical ability and expressed an interest in getting to know her better.
