She could resign herself to a quest ending, because they were supposed to end with proof, with knowledge. Not like this. Who was she supposed to be now, if she didn’t know?

Mari remembered wondering, early in the project, how she would know when the story was over. How she’d know when she’d found everything there was to find. But maybe that was the point. You could never know, not really. This was something science couldn’t touch. There were as many parts of a story as there were people who remembered it.
