This illustrates a major downside of patching: it occurs after the fact. The vulnerability is already in the system. Hackers may be actively exploiting it at the time of the patch. And even if they aren’t, the very act of patching calls attention to the vulnerability and exposes all of the systems that have not yet been patched.
