There are lots of systems in our world, particularly social systems, that are constrained by norms. Norms are less formal than rules; often unwritten, they nevertheless guide behavior. We are constrained by social norms all the time, different norms in different situations. Even politics is governed by norms as much as by law, something we repeatedly learned in the US in recent years as norm after norm was broken.
