We know the hacker who invented the NOW account: Ronald Haselton, president and CEO of the Consumer Savings Bank in Worcester, Massachusetts. Haselton is said to have overheard a customer asking why she couldn’t write checks from her savings account. He began to wonder the same thing, and hacked the Regulation Q rules to create what was in effect the first interest-bearing checking account.
