She was the sun in the endless dark abyss of the universe, a ball of fire so bright she made everything revolve around herself without even trying, and anything that didn’t was lost to float away and die. And he? He was the endless, dark abyss they died in, the one that surrounded her, the one that let her blaze.
“You’re the oxygen that feeds my flames—without you, my existence is questionable.”
“I think I’m in love with you.” He brushed his nose against hers, his eyes soft on her. “I know that you are.”
He had given her many gifts but his biggest, most beautiful had been the freedom.
She was free. She was fearless. She was flying. And it was all because of him. And that was more than enough.
As long as she kept breathing, he would find her. As long as she kept breathing, he would bring her back. As long as she kept breathing, he would stay in control. A man with nothing to lose was the most dangerous creature on this earth. And as long as she breathed, he had something to lose, something to long, something to live for.
He didn’t know if the tightness in his chest was what she called love, but he knew if there was an alternate reality where he could feel like normal people did, he would love her. His main motive now was to never let her long for that alternate version of himself.
She settled, fully facing him, seeing those mismatched eyes of his that had made him a demon child to the monsters. He was more. He was the devil and he was hers.
“If you had been there, I would have fucked you. Then, I would have stalked you, and I would have made you mine. There is no reality where you and I exist that we don’t end up exactly where we are now. None.”
So far, the Shadow Man had been absent, letting her do whatever she wanted, giving her the freedom to take her power. And she fucking loved him for it. She loved him for giving her a home, giving her a place to belong, giving her space to just be. And she loved him for bringing her to the place of her nightmares, for seeking vengeance on her behalf and stringing up the monsters, making her realize it all had no power over her anymore.
The fire, once terrifying, was now her lover, and it was this fire that had purified her, reset her, rekindled her.
For a man who said he didn't feel, he sure loved her a fucking lot.
And sitting in the arms of the devil she loved, not knowing what the future held for her, she felt hope. She felt safety. She felt love.
Whatever the future held, with him at her side, she would be okay. They would be okay.
It was a marvel, how this tiny girl who had never been on anyone's radar had found herself embraced in the arms of death.
"Dainn?" Fuck, her voice still made his body vibrate with sensations. "I love you."
He wasn't a believer, but she was his miracle.
He didn't know if what happened inside him where she was concerned was love. It felt wrong to say that. Love was light, love was beautiful, love was pure. What he felt was dark, obsessive, deviant, and utterly possessive.
She completed parts of him that had been jagged and raw, fitting inside them with softness and fluidity, soothing some latent beast within him.
Where she loved him with all her light, he possessed her with all his shadows. That's why she was his.
