Nobody had yet tried to bring a dead person back, or at least nobody had yet admitted to trying—the auto-dismembering gibbon was the field’s noblest accomplishment so far. But even if the technology was still dubious, its metaphysical premises were now widely accepted. And if a connectome scan of a loved one meant they were not truly gone, didn’t a connectome scan of an animal therefore mean that they were not truly extinct?
