“What the hell do you want from me, Em?” I ask. “Just say what you want. Tell me.” Emery stomps his foot and yells, “I want someone to fucking fight for me for once, goddammit.” My breath leaves me in a whoosh and I deflate. I’m frozen in place. Silence fills the chasm between us.

“Listen to me. You put me on a pedestal. I told you not to, and you did it anyway. And because of that, I ended up not living up to your expectations. I disappointed you.” My voice breaks and I have to swallow around the lump in my throat. “I love you for who you are. Can’t you do the same for me? I’m not perfect, but I will always fucking love you. It’s enough––it has to be.”
