Do you believe in hate at first sight? Neither did I, until Niko fucking Adamos strides into Studio 1 like he owns the goddamn place.
He looks like a modern day Greek god, and I hate him instantly.
“Christ,” I mutter. “Not everything is a porno.” Alex laughs. “Our lives are a porno, Dixon. Embrace it.”
“I need to sleep off this food,” Dixon counters. “Not allowed,” Alex says. “You’re coming with the rest of us, or I’ll turn you into a pumpkin.” “Yes, fairy godmother,” Dixon snarks.
I sit next to Malibu, who’s half-dozing on the couch. Brushing some of his hair back from his face, I wonder aloud, “What are you getting yourself into?”
“So I hug her and remind her that she doesn’t have to be brave all the time. That it’s okay to accept help. That she’s not alone.” Malibu nods once, looking at the floor. “You’re not alone, either, Mal.”
“Why?” I ask quietly. “Why me?” “Oh, griniári mou,” he says softly. Those words again, whatever they mean. “Don’t you see? I like you.” Three simple words. Three simple, profound words.
There’s a pause, and then quietly, Dixon says, “I don’t think I was ever acting with you, Niki.”
“All right, princess,” I tease. I did always like playing with princesses.
I hear Alex sputtering next to us, but while Niko’s lips are connected to mine, there’s only him. When Niko pulls back, he says, “Hey, boyfriend.” I grin. “Hi.” “You dick,” Alex says with feeling, swatting my arm.
I haven’t been serious about much in my life, but I’m serious about Dixon. I want him for keeps.
Do you believe in love at first sight? Neither did I. Shows what I know.
Nevertheless, I reply in kind, whispering my own benediction into the salty air. A quiet thank you. A gentle reminder of what I’ve gained. “Agápi mou,” I say. ‘My love.’
