So I ask God, “What is this? I think I’m more important than what my wife thinks I am. I think I’m more valuable. Why do I want to defend that false self? Why do I have to protect that?”
Moses takes the bait and kills the Egyptian taskmaster, and for the first time in his life, Moses becomes afraid of Pharaoh. He also exchanges his true identity as a deliverer of oppressed people for that of a murdering exile. Moses is effectively banished from leadership for forty years because his ego got the better of him.
Ask God, “What do you want me to know? What do you want me to do?” Especially when negative emotions come up, indicating that what you believe in the situation is wrong, ask God, “What is this? What is the source of this negative emotion? Where does it come from? Why do I feel unworthy and fearful in this situation? Help me to know myself.”
revelation always precedes transformation.
First come attention, awareness, and annunciation, and then I can start doing what he says—action.
The difference between the ideas that come from God and those from someone who’s just really good at coming up with them is that God’s ideas transform the people involved. The ideas and resulting actions are redemptive.
His spirit jumped: “Wow, this is me! This is what God created me for.”
That’s why walking and talking with the Lord every day is so important. “God, what do you call me? Say it again. I want to hear you say it again.” And when you doubt, “Lord, what do you call me? You do not call me this. What do you call me?”
Remember: attention, awareness, annunciation, and then action.
You quench the Spirit by not listening. Fear, guilt, and shame quench the Spirit. Fear, in particular, is the great mind killer.
the number one exhortation from God in all of Scripture is “Do not be afraid.”
Each day, as you’re growing and learning, keep asking the Lord these questions: “What do you want me to know today to live into my true identity? And what do you want me to do?” Your being, your true self, will always inform your doing.
The question, however, is not, What are the facts? The question is, What does God want me to know about these facts as they stand?
You haven’t missed anything yet in your life, not one thing. God says to ask him and he’ll give you the years the locusts have eaten away.11 Ask God for the years back.
God, help me to pay attention to who you say I am. Help me to stop believing the lies and accusations as you exchange them for your truth. Help me to be aware of what you’re doing in my life and what the enemy is doing in my life. Help me to hear from you, the true Lord God. Then, Lord, would you help me to develop action steps in the direction of those things you have for me?
Abiding = Attention, Awareness, Annunciation, and Action.
