Reverie

This is where it happened. This is where they found Kane’s body.

First line

How many times had he been asked that question? How many more times had he answered it without being asked, just for the sake of people uncomfortable with ambiguity, who ignored what this person had to say while instead wondering viciously at his identity?

“If you look at most female archetypes—the mother, the virgin, the whore—their power comes from their relation to men. But not the Witch. The Witch derives her power from nature. She calls forth her dreams with spells and incantations. With poetry. And I think that’s why we are frightened of them. What’s scarier to the world of men than a woman limited only by her imagination?”

Kane wasn’t scared to talk about his pain; he was scared of making other people listen. So he kept it all to himself.

“Just because something is imagined doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. Sometimes the things we believe in are the most dangerous things about us.

“Weapons only destroy, my dear. Instruments, however, both destroy and create. That’s what makes them so powerful. The holy grail, Pandora’s box, the genie’s lamp; all were sources of etherea. If you look, really look, history is full of instruments that make the unreal real, that call forth power from nothing.”

The third thing was that the champagne was served warm. But no one minded that, on account of the monsters.
