Just like a fractured arm becomes too weak to be used properly, if we are fractured in our thinking, we won’t use our thoughts in healthy ways. If we are fractured in our feelings, we won’t use our emotions in healthy ways. If we are fractured in our doing, we won’t act and react in healthy ways.
Basically, I can’t let other people’s fractured thinking affect me to the point where I get my thinking out of alignment with God’s truth. I can’t let other people’s fractured feelings affect me to the point where my feelings get out of alignment with God’s truth. And I can’t let other people’s actions affect me to the point where my actions get out of alignment with God’s truth.
We are walking in victory. Therefore, we should be wearing our victory clothes.
The best of who we are is made possible by the best of what God has done for us. He has chosen us. He has set us apart for His holy purpose. And He loves us with an intentional and dedicated love that won’t quit on us.
Someone else being disappointed doesn’t make us a disappointment.
“Please forgive me for originally saying yes to your request when I should have said no. Because I love you, it brings me so much joy to make you happy. And because I want to be at peace with you and be appreciated by you, I let my desire to please you run ahead of my honest assessment of this situation. But now my anxiety about saying yes is sounding the alarm inside my heart that I made the wrong decision. So I need to make a change here and say no.”
No trauma is healed in a healthy way by developing unhealthy ways of coping.
People pleasing isn’t just about keeping others happy. It’s about getting from them what we think we must have in order to feel okay in the world.
Maybe the real core issue is that I fear there will be a devastating gap between what I think I need and what God will actually provide. Maybe I fear I must get from people what I am unsure God will provide for me. And if I fear God’s provision is incomplete, I must fill in that gap with other people or I won’t make it in this big, sometimes scary, often threatening, and always chaotic world. Therefore, I’ve made people the answer to my security rather than God Himself.
God calls us to obey Him. God does not call us to obey every wish and whim of other people. God calls us to love other people. God does not call us to demand that they love us back and meet every need we have.
