My older sister, Lenora, now out of the house in college, spent most of her teen years creatively bending their orders or outright defying them. Me? I was the kid who learned compliance made life easier. Just do the thing. Way less lecturing.

There’s an age-old debate whether pride is a virtue or a vice.

I wasn’t great at navigating awkward discussions. I didn’t like disappointing anyone or confronting issues. I preferred to apologize for any wrongness and move on.

“It felt like things might be changing between us and I liked it. I like seeing you here. You’re…different.” I liked seeing him in a different way too, but I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud. A heavy sensation weighed down.
