I hadn’t seen a beach, not even one on TV. I had managed to clean gutters at Grandpa’s house. Truly, I led a glamorous life.

who clearly—well, it wasn’t exactly clear how he was acting right now.
“You’re upset with me because I care? About you?”
“In the hallway. You looked right at me and your face—it was a smirk.” How could he not remember? I twisted my own mouth as close as I could get as a demonstration. “You know, like a smarmy, know-it-all grin—” “I know what a smirk is.”
“No offense, but smirking at my breakup was a confusing signal to me at the time.”
If only I could clone myself. Yes, cloning would solve everything.
“What are you actually planning down here?” I scanned the boxes and piles of old equipment. My idea was ludicrous. “World domination through mini-golf?”

“Kind of a trend lately.” “Oh?” I managed in a nonchalant tone. He grinned. “Yeah. I think about you a lot.”
I had a lot to obsessively think over while I worked today.
“Joe’s old, Lila,” said Kara. “Anybody younger than him is a kid.”
The boy was strange. And I didn’t hate his brand of strange.
