After two conversations, I’d describe her as ambitious. Fearless. Vivacious. That’s what I need to look out for.
“I never swallow because a guy says so.” Crew clears his throat. Coughs. Laughs. “Good.”
“I’ll never.” “Forever is a long time, Scarlett.” He drops his hand from my waist and strolls out of the library, as if he did nothing more than hand me a ring.
“You’re not wearing your dress.”
“Begging is not happening. I’m not that desperate. See you on the altar, baby.”
“Ask me.” “Ask you what?” “Ask me to kiss you, Scarlett. Isn’t that what this conversation has been about?”
He cups my face, his fingers brushing my cheeks, as he tilts my head back and forces my gaze to meet his. “Tell me,” he demands.
“Kiss me.”
I’ve thought she looked stunning every single time I’ve seen her in the ten years that have elapsed since.
But today? She’s devastatingly, heartbreakingly beautiful. The untouchable sort of regal. An ice queen. A snow angel. A moon goddess.
She may want to—try to—forget this day. This moment. She won’t be able to.
After he ran me a bath. And Crew is acting like all of this is a normal occurrence.
“Kensington,” I correct. Hannah’s brow furrows. “Her name is Scarlett Kensington now.”
I smile, feeling her heart race. She may not want to want me, but she does. I know the feeling well.
“Hannah, this is my wife, Scarlett. Scarlett, this is Hannah Garner.”
“You have horrible taste in women.” I look over. “What does that say about you?” She ignores me. “I don’t want her in my penthouse.”
“He sounds like a tool.” “Jealous?” she taunts. “That would require me caring what you do.” “Exactly.”
“Real fucking mature, Sport.” I lean forward to press one final, bruising kiss to her mouth.
“Good night. Red.”
She kisses me. I’m too shocked to react at first. By the time I start to respond, she’s already pulling back. One small smile, and she’s gone.
“You were watching?” “Always, Red.”
Exploring Paris with the most beautiful woman in the world. She outshines all the sights.
I want him and I don’t want anyone else to have him.
We’ve only been married for a little over a month. And yet, I can’t imagine my life without her in it.
I can’t look away from her.
We maintain eye contact as we both drink, and it feels more intimate than I can recall sex ever being.
“Scarlett, how could you—I could never be disappointed in you, okay? I swear. You could murder someone, and I’d bury the body, no questions asked. If rouge doesn’t do well, I’ll be fucking proud of you for trying.”
“I want you. I’ll always want you.”
You’re different, Scarlett. You matter to me, Red. I’d choose you over anyone. Anytime. Anywhere. Don’t doubt that. Ever.”
“What are you doing?” she murmurs. “Carrying you.” “Don’t stop,” she instructs, her voice sleepy. “I won’t.” “Don’t give up on me.” “I won’t,” I repeat.
“You weren’t thinking clearly.” “No shit. I can’t think clearly around you.” “That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me, baby.” “Don’t get used to it.” “I’d like to.”
“You look beautiful,”
We. I’ve never been part of a we. It just became my new favorite word in the English language. I’m in love with the sound. And the man saying it.
My mood revolves around hers. I know what all that adds up to.
“My family is right here.”
Crew Kensington doesn’t just have the ability to hurt me. He holds the power to destroy me, if he ever decides to use it.
“I can’t picture my life without her.”
“I love her, Dad. I love her so fucking much.
I love him because I want to. Because he challenges me and confides in me. Supports and softens me. I know the moment he enters the room and the second he leaves.
“I love you, Scarlett. So fucking much.”
It’s the note Crew wrote. But the side I’m staring at is the sticky back. The side I didn’t think anyone wrote on. Crew did. And by the way, I love you.
“You won’t, baby. I’m almost there.”
“She’s okay. And you’ve got a healthy baby girl.”
