a real thing. Written Chinese is not phonetic, so acted as a bridge across the many different spoken languages and dialects. Example still sen today is Mandarin vs Cantonese - mutually unintelligible to speakers but using the same written characters, with (mostly) same meaning - different from English and French sharing same alphabet but still using it to express the different languages.
