I’d been born to fulfill a promise to the fae king. It was an ancient promise, bound in powerful magic. I was sworn to serve his every need, smile and laugh at his jokes, be silent when commanded, and offer myself up as his next mortal bride.

It was the one person I’d hoped never to meet again, especially here with a pocket full of his precious stones. King Oberon had found us.

He was my king, but I did not enjoy bowing to him.

When we entered the throne room, I expected to find dozens of courtiers buzzing about, but it was just the Mist King. At the end of a long stretch of carpet, he lounged on a throne made of…stars. It glittered like diamonds, driving away the darkness, matching the crown that he hadn’t been wearing earlier. Gone was the boring cloak, the mask, and his pretense that he was a simple rebel. His silver tunic and black trousers hugged his muscular frame, but it was the dark cloak that caught my attention. It draped around him, its edges embroidered with silver crescent moons.

“What did he do to you?” the Mist King repeated in a soft, dangerous voice that curled across me like the mists.

With a shuddering sigh, he jammed his fingers into his hair and turned away. “Make sure she has a bath and a fresh change of clothes. And for the moon’s sake, make sure she eats some fucking bread.”

Alastair hung back and fell into step beside me. He cracked a grin. “You look like someone just fed you a plate of literal shit.”

The Mist King lowered his head to my leg, pressed his lips against my roiling skin, and...sucked. A shudder went through me as his hands gently gripped my thighs, his mouth working, his lips caressing. A spark of delirious pleasure went through me at the sight of him there. And the fact it actually felt...good.

Suddenly, he whipped off his cloak and draped it across my shoulders. The intoxicating scent of mist and snow enveloped me. My mouth popped open to argue. I didn’t want his cloak anywhere near me. For one, it had touched him. And two, well, it had touched him.

I didn’t know what pookas were, but by the flash of alarm on the Mist King’s face, I knew I didn’t want to find out. “Get behind me,” he barked, drawing the sword from the sheath at his back. Power rumbled in the cave. “Don’t try anything stupid.” I scowled as he edged in front of me, blocking my body from anything that might shoot in from outside the cave. “What makes you so sure I’d try something stupid?” “I’ve spent more than five minutes in your presence,” he threw over his shoulder. “That was enough.”

His form was near-perfect, even with the blood splattered across his impressive pecs and chiseled abs. It almost hurt to look at him. My hand twitched, still locked around the dagger, and suddenly, I felt extremely self-conscious.

The Mist King swung up onto the horse, settling in behind me. His substantial chest shifted against my back as he reached an arm on either side of me to grab the reins. I scowled as his hands settled onto my thighs, just above my knees. The heat and power of him pressed into me. Something within me clenched. “This is not necessary,” I said hotly

wanted to hate every moment of this. He was rude and monstrous and cruel and murderous and hateful and…also very muscular and strong.

“You’re freezing,” he said, his voice sounding worried. “Is the cloak not helping?” “Doesn’t seem so.” “Hmm.” Without another word, he pushed up from the chair and climbed into the bed. Alarm jolted through me, making me forget about the cold for a moment. “What are you doing?” I tried to squirm away from him, but he curved a strong arm over my body and pulled me against his chest. My heart nearly stopped. The warmth of him seeped into my bones, chasing the cold away. “I’m making sure you’re warm,” he said gruffly.

“Kalen,” I whispered as he angled his sword at the monster. “It looks like it wants to eat me.” “Don’t worry,” he said in a low growl. “It would have to kill me before I would let it take you from me.”
