I’d been born to fulfill a promise to the fae king. It was an ancient promise, bound in powerful magic. I was sworn to serve his every need, smile and laugh at his jokes, be silent when commanded, and offer myself up as his next mortal bride. Instead of all that, I leapt into a chasm where monsters lived.
But I didn’t break then, and I wouldn’t break now. They’d have to kill me before I let them douse the fire in my heart.
“I understand what you tried to do, even if I don’t like the result of it.”
“Kalen,” I whispered as he angled his sword at the monster. “It looks like it wants to eat me.” “Don’t worry,” he said in a low growl. “It would have to kill me before I would let it take you from me.”
If something as breathtaking as the stars could exist, surely this world could be a better place.
The girl who had always dreamed of a better world.
“You are exquisitely brave.”
“It’s no use wishing for things that never were and never will be,”
