Eleven years, eight months, three weeks, and twenty-seven days. That was how long it had been since he’d touched Lucy. And he’d sworn then that it would be the last time ever.
What do you want? Late-night calls. Kisses sweeter than honey. Someone that will stir my soul. Stupid inside jokes. Fun dates. Sharing hopes and fears. To feel safe and secure. A space of my own.
“I like fast, then slow,” Alex said, a bit of bass in his voice. “I get a chance to catch my breath and feel it all. I like to take my time.”
If Alex’s life were a movie, it would be a romantic comedy. He’d met the girl, lost the girl, and now he found himself right back in her life.
He lived under one rule: If you don’t keep anything, you can’t lose it.
He sent out a prayer for the souls who survived the Middle Passage and for those whose souls remained with the water. Their names may be forgotten, but their ancestors of the land and sea continued to honor their strength.
Fate was rarely kind to those who loved each other in the space where the ocean met the land.

When you gave your heart and soul to a place or a person, you gave it the power to shatter your heart and tear apart your soul.
It was never the wish. It was her finding the courage to pursue the life she’d only dreamed about.

“If you have the courage to wish, you have the courage to act.
Open your heart to the possibilities of love. There are countless reasons to walk away. Find the reasons to stay.
There was no other universe or world she wanted to be in but this one, here with him.
