“Emerson, I need you to listen to me and listen real fucking hard,” I say through clenched teeth. I’m barely holding onto my composure. “I will not have you speaking about yourself like that. You. Are. Everything.”
“Okay.” “Okay?” I ask. “If you don’t want kids, we won’t have kids. As long as I have you, I have everything I could ever want.”
“Gee, Russo really has a hard-on for me, doesn’t he. Sending so many of his men to collect little old me.”
The oval diamond sparkles under the light. It’s more simple than I would have gone with almost any other woman, but when I went through designs with the jeweler, I knew it was the one right away.
I stare at her for a moment, unsure in what reality she thinks I wouldn’t want her. Doesn’t she realize my life begins and ends with her? Without her shining light, a man like me lives in the darkness. “I will always want you, sweet girl. You are my everything. And I can’t wait for you to be my wife.”
“Vodka, please,” I say quickly. “Get her some crackers or something too. She’s not drinking on an empty stomach.” Rayne glowers at Doc and me. I smirk. It’s good to be home.
Most nights I had night terrors, the memories of what Angelo and his cousins had done to me too much for my subconscious to battle. And every night Rayne would hold me through it, whispering sweet words to calm my racing heart.
The moment Tommy told Storm and Rayne they were each getting an additional two guards at all times was a conversation I will cherish for the rest of my life. The two strongest, manliest men I had ever met were beyond offended when they found out, but Tommy, who was helping Rayne while he was off work, was having no arguments.
“Marry me,” I whisper. Rayne smiles, crawling back over me so our eyes are level. “I already proposed, sweet girl. Or did I fuck you so good you forgot about the ring on your finger?” I giggle. “No, I mean I want to get married soon, like on the weekend. I don’t want to wait anymore. I want to be your wife.” Rayne’s grin is so pure I almost can’t contemplate how this man has murdered so many people, and yet still look at me like I hung the moon. “Fuck yes.”
