In front of everyone, he kept me at arm’s length and acted like I was his little sister. When no one was looking, he would sneak into my room and hold me in his arms until the sun rose.
“You are a constant in my life. And I hate the fact that I’m going to be leaving you. The fact that I won’t see you almost every single day. I won’t see you sitting in the stands, cheering me on at every game.”
Logan kisses me deeply, and there’s nothing rushed in the way his lips move against mine. He breathes me in like I’m the oxygen his body needs to survive and I give him every last breath. He’s gentle and tender, stroking the sides of my face, like we have all the time in the world together. Like he’s savoring the moment and imprinting this memory in his brain for after he leaves.
“That’s where you’re wrong, babe.” His voice is low, soft and warm, just like his palms on me. “Everything you do will always concern me.”
“You’re not my keeper, Knight.” I glare up at him, feeling my body sway on unsteady legs. “You don’t get to tell me what I can and can’t do.” Logan’s face falls and he tilts his head to the side with a pained look in his eyes. “Don’t do that,” he whispers, his voice strained. My eyebrows pinch together. “Do what?” “Don’t call me Knight, like everyone else.” “Your friends call you Knight.” I roll my eyes in a dramatic fashion before pushing past him. “I’m just making sure that I’m playing the part right.”
“Because even though I don’t deserve you, that doesn’t mean there’s anyone who comes close to you. I refuse to settle for anything less than greatness, baby. And that’s exactly what you are.”
“I want you to be my first.” The corners of Logan’s lips lift. “And your last, Isla. I’m going to ruin you for anyone else. I’m going to leave my mark so deep in your fucking soul that you won’t ever want anyone but me.”
“Can you do something for me, baby?” “Anything,” she whispers as she lifts her head and rolls onto her stomach slightly, sliding her hands against my chest before propping her chin on them. “Be mine?”
“That’s what you want?” “More than anything in the world.” I watch as her face transforms, her lips curling upward into a grin, and her body slides against mine as she moves closer, her hands cupping the sides of my face. “I’ve always been yours, Logan Knight, ever since we were kids.” She pauses, the pads of her thumbs slowly stroking my cheeks. “You’ve just been too stupid to realize it.” “I hope you know I’m never going to let you go now.” “Good.” She brings her lips to mine, warm and soft brushing against mine. “Because I wouldn’t let you, even if you tried.”
“Come with me.” My eyebrows draw together as my heart pounds erratically in my chest. “Come with you where?” “Wherever I go.” His voice is soft, but his eyes are pleading. “I don’t want to live life without you, Isla. I can’t stand the thought of being away from you. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I want you to come with me, to be by my side, wherever that may be.”
My eyes widen as I watch him slowly lower himself in front of me, dropping to one knee on the ice. He releases one of my hands, reaching into the zipper pocket of his coat before he pulls out a black velvet box.
“You’re the only teammate that matters to me—that I want to spend the rest of my life with. Will you marry me, Isla Whitley?”
“You’re it for me, baby,” he smiles, rising to his feet as he wraps his hands around my waist. I link my arms around the back of his neck. “When I envision my future, you’re all I see. You’re all I want.”
