You shook the puzzle pieces in your hands, you let them fall, faceup or facedown, into the box. If they were just squares with fragments of images on them, you would never know they were parts of a puzzle. But their shapes, the indentations and excrescences on their sides that permit their combination, show they are part of a system, that they were cut apart and scattered intentionally, in order for a mind and fingers to put them back together.
