The same is true in America’s contemporary hate movement, where animus is justified, incentivized, learned, and performed. Hate abhors a vacuum. Ritual and action signal belonging and do harm in the same stroke.

Bigotry in America has many branches, some bigger and stronger than others, but they all derive from the same trunk.

In reality, it loves wielding mothers as symbols more than it does the actual women who bear and (or) raise children.
