For all the survivors
“How do you know if you are going to die?” I begged my mother. We had been traveling for days. With strange confidence she answered, “When you can no longer make a fist.”
Emma swallows everything down, even the feelings she doesn’t fully understand, and steps inside.
She can hear her voice climbing, is powerless to stop it.
“Just because you’re smiling doesn’t mean you’re not feeling stuff, right?”
Emma reflects that Kristin is a person who truly lives in the moment. She doesn’t seem to worry about the future or hang on too tightly to the past. Like a Buddhist monk. It must be a strange way to exist—unconcerned, unentangled, but also weirdly unmoored.
“I rarely wake before noon. Evenings are the best time for living.”
“I’m okay,” Emma says, when she clearly isn’t. Travis wants to burn down the world.
“So I know you will understand when I say that every individual is a spectrum. From light to dark, we all hold goodness and evil inside. Even the most holy man has flaws—petty grievances, weaknesses, vices, faults. It is what makes us all human.”
“I came here with you to show you,” Travis blurts suddenly. “I want you to see that you can trust me. That I’m on your side. That I choose you. Emma, I would choose you over an FBI order every time.”
