In one swift move, the djinn drops my hand and falls to his knees before me. My flames extinguish, leaving me feeling invigorated and strong. The djinn lifts his head to find my gaze. “Forgive me, my queen. My name is Fehr, and I am your humble servant. Welcome home.”
“You can learn to wield water too,” he says, returning to our previous conversation. “As a queen, you have access to all four elements now. It’s only a matter of learning how to manipulate them.”
“The mainland army comes even as we speak. Warships by the dozen. The time of the fae is at an end.”
My blood goes cold. I don’t need to know the name he refuses to say. It could be but one person. He grins, opening more fissures at the corners of his mouth. “Mr. Duveau sends his love.”
“Afraid of what? That you’ll actually enjoy your life beneath my rule and serve me out of respect rather than duty? Why, yes, what a terrifying thought.”
“Besides, I meant it. Compared to how you’ve mastered my heart, that hovering orb is nothing.”
My mate glances from me to Foxglove, then gives a resigned shake of his head. Slinging his arm over the ambassador’s shoulders, he gives him a cajoling
smile. “Did you like what you saw, my friend?” Foxglove blushes deeper, eyes flicking up at Aspen as a grin stretches across his face. “I think it would be a treasonous lie to say I didn’t, Your Majesty.”
“Because water is the element of emotion. And the most powerful emotion of all is love, which you are no stranger to. All you have to do is open to it. All of it.”
“Always and forever, Evie.” Aspen’s voice comes low and rough. “No matter how many days that is.”
