“I made a deal with a demon. Compared to Azazel, you’re just a dude with bat wings. Nothing to write home about.” She smirks. “Cute horns, though. Really adorable.” My horns are not adorable.
“I’m sorry.” I make a face. “I don’t know why I said that. They’re pointless words that do absolutely nothing. And then it puts you in a position where you’re supposed to say something back, and . . . what are you even supposed say to that? I never know.”
But old habits die hard. I don’t know how to just relax and enjoy this. I keep waiting for the bad thing to happen, even if I don’t know what that bad thing is in this situation.
“I suppose that’s how life works.” I speak slowly, feeling my way. “It’s filled with people making the best of each day, no matter what it brings.”
Sometimes it’s better to say less, especially when my words so often get away from me.
“The decision on whether to have children—and who to have them with—shouldn’t be made because of power or family legacy. It should be made because you want a child and a family.”
