The space between them is meaningless when Julien’s presence suffuses every particle of air, fogging the glass around Whisper’s heart.
“I want you to stay for a very long time. I want to get to know you better. Slowly. That’s why I want you to know you can leave whenever you want. I want you to stay, but I don’t want you trapped here, if you ever want to leave.”

His hand comes away red with fresh blood, and Fisk looks very pleased with himself.
But there’s something different about this. Like Will is kneeling for Julien alone, not his title.
“Yes… Julien.”
“I took this scar for you,” Whisper says. “That’s not a bad thing. I’ll never regret it.”
I wanted the marks. The proof that my failure had happened. The proof that the punishment had happened.
