We began with the discovery of cells: their structure, their physiology, their metabolism, their respiration, and their inner anatomy. We journeyed, if briefly, into the world of single-celled microbes and the transformative effect of that discovery on medicine: antisepsis, and the eventual discovery of antibiotics.
