“Why? You wanna mess around behind his back again?” Trinket gave Mini a scowl of ‘too soon.’ “Why don’t you wake him up?” he suggested. Mini made a face. “He’ll force me to ‘feel my feelings’ again,” he said. “No thanks.”
Mini snarled. Glowering sideways at Trinket, he said, “Call off your fiancé.” “No,” said Trinket, enjoying himself immensely.
“Zee, tell him how good-looking he is. Oh, oh! Tell him which of his tattoos you like the best. Then lick them.” “You’re both monsters,” Mini spat, then let out a shocked moan, too surprised by something Zee had done under the covers to shut his mouth in time.
“You’re an asshole,” breathed Mini. “You fucked my boyfriend behind my back for a year,” Zee pointed out. “I don’t think you have the high ground here.”
“Don’t get all choked up already,” said Mini, exasperated. “I’m serious. If you start crying, I will get up and fuck your face.”
“Whose idea was it,” he asked calmly. “to put tiny things in huge boxes?” “His,” said Zee. “Yeah, but you agreed it was funny.” Mini pointed at him. “I didn’t agree,” said Zee. “I just didn’t argue.” Why had Trinket thought that polyamory was a good idea?
“My favorite poet,” marveled Trinket, beginning to leaf through the first book, “writes gay erotica.”
“You have the money,” said Mini, returning Zee’s look with an unrepentant smile, half sneer. “I needed to use other means to get the best present.” “It’s not a competition.” Zee scowled. “It can be,” said Mini, and tossed him a flirty look. “Winner gets to top?”
“Mini,” said Zee calmly. “Let me make sure I understand correctly. Your present to Trinket is that you want a cat... for yourself.” “Yes,” said Mini.
“A cat is cheaper than therapy,” said Mini.
Zee finally spoke up. “You just need more proof, huh?” “What do you mean?” Mini raised his eyebrows and pulled back the cat toy an inch. “More proof that we’re not going to get tired of you and kick you out,” said Zee.
Instead, they had turned it into a competition. He was barely involved — except as the prize.
