“It’s not a competition,” said Trinket. “I know it’s not,” said Mini. “I’m not here to win. I just like to play.”
Something about being observed... it turned off the silent observer in Trinket’s head. He didn’t have to wonder what Mini would think, because Mini was right there. He trusted Mini’s feedback. And Mini wouldn’t have been shy about giving it. Mini lifted the load. And with someone else to think those thoughts, to observe, to encourage, to break it up, Trinket’s mind finally went peacefully blank.
Of course the two of them together would be worse, of course Mini’s villainous teasing would mesh horribly with Zee’s sadistic streak, why had Trinket ever thought this would be good, ever fantasized about it—
Were the two of them really so self aware? That must be exhausting.
We all did things... bad and good. What you did was protect the person I love, the only person I have ever known how to love, when all I could do was hurt him. I can’t tell you what it means to me, to know that he was not alone. That he was not afraid.
