“Let him choose his intentions.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “You’re already assuming you know the ‘why’ behind what he did, but the truth is, Tyler’s the only one who knows.”
Confession: I’ve gone so long without a relationship that sometimes I have a hard time believing anyone would want to date me.
“You deserve a hero. Someone who would take care of you, even though you’re capable of caring for yourself.” My lips parted. Was he saying... “A hero would lean in, kiss your forehead, and walk away, because, with a girl like you, he’d know the best is yet to come.”
“A partner, a true partner, can change everything. They’ll bring out the best in you, force you to acknowledge your weak spots, help you grow faster than you ever could on your own. I’d hate for you to miss out on that because you don’t think you deserve it.”
“I’ll just say it,” Cohen said as he shuffled the deck over and over again. “What are your intentions with Henrietta?”
“My intentions?” I hedged.
“Henrietta doesn’t date. Not seriously, anyway.”
“Maybe she hasn’t found the right match yet.”
“And you’re saying you could be that match?”
“I’m saying I’m all in,” I replied, pushing all my chips to the center of the table.
When we turned our cards over, I won.
“You want her falling for the real you and not some lame tip your brother gave you five minutes before the date. Just be yourself, okay? It’s enough. I promise it’s enough.”
“Settling down is not the same as settling for less. It’s resting where you know you belong. Not needing to run and chase and search anymore. It’s the best feeling ever.”
Our eyes met, and her smile grew, deepened, and for a moment, all the air was gone from the room. All the people had vanished. It was her and me and the sound of the pounding in my chest.
“I was crying because I’ve never felt closer to anyone else than I have to you today. I’m so lucky to know you, Tyler. To be loved by you.” His eyebrows lifted, and I instantly backtracked. “Not saying you’re in love with me, but—”
“I do love you, Henrietta Jones. I love you.”
“I love you too, Tyler.”
“I’ll make sure you never want anyone else.”
Tyler held my face in both of his hands. “I need you to hear this.”
“What other people think about you will never change the way I see you, right now. You are perfect, kind, sexy as hell, and Black.
“I’m serious,” he said. “But I also want you to know that Cottonwood Falls is different from what you see on the news. The people there look out for each other, no matter if you’ve been there five days or fifty years. They’re going to love you.”
“When you and Tyler have arguments, because you will, don’t look at it like a break from the ideal life you want to live. Look at it as a chance to make things stronger than they were before.”
Don’t get caught up in keeping score, because in a marriage, you’re both on the same team.”
