“But you make me wait,” Vivian said softly. “You make me wait, and then you make me scream.”

“Good night.” Jules padded toward her bathroom to get ready for bed. But just as she was starting to floss, her phone rang again. Vivian. Was everything okay? Had something happened with the baby in the last few minutes? Jules scrambled to answer. “Hello? What’s wrong?” “Well?” Vivian said. Jules looked at her phone screen in confusion. Vivian said, again, “Well?” “Uh,” Jules said, then realized. “I-I love you?” “Thank you,” Vivian said, clearly exasperated, before disconnecting again. Of all the—! Jules growled as she strung the dental floss between her teeth, considering and discarding the idea of calling Vivian back within moments. She didn’t have the energy.

“I’m not allowed to touch?” Vivian asked. “Fine. You’ll do it for me. Start with your breasts.”
