Looking back I see I gave him no chance to be a warm, affectionate father. I just couldn’t let go and open my hand or heart. I felt there was a barrier and I was routinely unkind in the things I said to him over the years. I don’t think I ever really praised him. Things he wanted to talk to me about I’d make fun of.
