This and other studies led to the thrifty phenotype hypothesis, which proposes that babies deprived of proper nutrition in utero are more likely to develop obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Unfortunately, this hypothesis overlooks or ignores the fact that these babies are also more likely to develop mental disorders.
