Her blood roiled with a terrible mix of fear, anger, and worry. Lily struggled to muster what Ash had always said she needed—patience and acceptance. She had to let her feelings wash over her like water on stone, releasing her own desires. It wasn’t working. What she felt was too strong, too desperate. She couldn’t possibly smother it. She was too much a mess—and so as a mess, she threw herself forward, lurching into the onmyōdō.
“Ask my brother—what is the most dangerous animal to encounter in the wilderness?” Lily didn’t have to ask. She already knew the answer, even as a child of the city. It was simply understood. “A mother,” she replied. “Defending her young.”
If she cannot find a way to save what she loves, then she will bloody well make one.
“I’m afraid I can’t carry you,” he admitted. “But I could go ahead. Send on a few strapping lads from the village.” “Wouldn’t you be jealous?” “Oh, entirely,” Strangford assured her. “I should rather like to be carried myself at the moment.”
