I bend down and drop a lingering kiss on her mouth, squeezing the slight curve of her hip. She lets out a little moan, and angles her head to deepen the kiss. A sound at the door distracts me, and over Vashti’s shoulder, my gazes locks with Yasmen’s. She’s standing in the office door, her eyes clouded and the lush curve of her mouth pulled tight. I can’t help but think of the night when I watched her first kiss with Mark. Have they kissed again? Had another date? Fucked? I don’t want to know.
“The only thing holding us together,” Merry says, looking at Ken with affection, “is our love, but that is the proof of it. That we could leave at any time.” “But neither of us ever would. Never have. I would argue that what we’ve made is stronger, truer than most marriages because of the freedom it allows us.” “So you have an open relationship?” Harvey asks. “I didn’t know that.”
“Si.” I push his name out, and my chest rises and falls with upheaving breaths. “Ask me again if I’m sorry you and Vashti broke up.” His eyes darken, narrow, the long lashes curling and tangling at the corners. “Are you?” I grip the back of his neck, pull him closer to leave the truth on his lips. “Hell, no.” We crash together and our first kiss in years burns from the beginning.
“Shit, Yas.” He dips his head to scatter kisses at my neck. “I’mma come.” He starts pulling out, but I grab his ass and won’t let him go. “I’m on birth control,” I whisper. “Don’t pull out.” He stills, looks down at me, and a frown puckers his thick, dark brows. “I’ve never been raw with anyone else. I promise.” “I believe you.” I reach up to brush my fingertips over the fullness of his lips. “Give it to me.”
“This is not a reconciliation.” Of course I knew that, but the words spoken so clearly, so easily, like it doesn’t cost him anything, the idea of living the rest of his life like this, still burns. “I know that,” I answer. “It’s just fucking.” He shakes his head, a breath of a laugh breezing past his full lips. “It could never be just fucking, not with us. You know that. It will always feel like more, but I want to be very clear that it can’t be.”
“This is grown folks’ business. This is our business. We didn’t tell you because we don’t have to.” I pause to let that sink in before going on. “And we know you and your brother have experienced a lot of transition. We didn’t want to confuse you unnecessarily when this between your mom and me is…”
