I close my eyes and shake my head in irritation. One of these days, I’m going to strangle Valentina.
when I notice her, and the pressure I didn’t realize was gripping my chest vanishes.
couldn’t have been gone more than an hour. How did she manage to do all that in such a short time?
I watch her work a few more minutes, noticing the way she narrows her eyes on some detail from time to time, or how she cocks her head to the side and bites her cheek when she’s thinking. Her hair is a mess of tangled strands which she’s collected at the top of her head and fixed with a pencil. Such a strange creature. So different from the women I’m used to spending my time with. It’s refreshing, and dangerously alluring.
She looks at me with a mix of confusion and disgust on her face, so it seems I have to clarify. “Listening devices. Not insects.”
She smiles and winks at me. She fucking winks at me.
“Are heels a must, do you think?” She scrunches her tiny nose. “Of course they are. Damn it. I hate wearing heels.”
I’m fascinated with the way she’s creating this new person. It’s both crazy and brilliant. “She must be amazing in bed, to be able to wrap her husband around her finger that way,” I comment. “Of course she is. How else would she make him lose his mind like that? She’s not very bright, but she gives the best blowjobs.”
This woman is important to Roman, it’s evident from the sound of his voice when he talks to her. He seems less guarded, somehow.
“There won’t be any sex involved. But Valentina will be bringing dinner to my room, and you are going to be there.” He throws the words over his shoulder. “In your room?” “In my bed, Nina.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “It’s not you, Roman.” “I know.” I reach out to place my palm on her cheek and brush away the tear. “I’m going to kill him, malysh. It’s going to be slow, and it’s going to be painful. Just give me his name.” “No.” “I’m not asking. Give me his fucking name.” “I said no. I’m not making anyone a murderer.” “Too late for that, Nina. The name.”
What an unusual creature she is, and it feels so good to hold her in my arms like this. I wish it wasn’t just for show.
“No holding my wrists or squeezing my neck.” She says, and I feel the cold rush down my spine. “Also, no pinning me down with your body.”
“Go back to your room, malysh. We are not doing this,” he says in a clipped tone. Shit. I knew he would react this way. “It’s okay, Roman.” “No. You’ve been hurt. I’m not going to make you—”
“It still fucked up my head. I can’t control my reactions sometimes, but it has nothing to do with you.” “Are you sure? I need you to be sure, Nina.” “I’m sure.”
It’s meant to be just a quick kiss, but the moment I feel his lips on mine all rational thoughts go flying, and in the next moment my hands are clutching him to me with all my might.
“He was speeding while transporting my drugs. Drunk,” I say, unbelieving. “Where is the idiot?”
He’s staring straight ahead, feigning composure, but I can see it on his face, he’s barely managing not to burst out laughing. “Do you want to try it, honey? It does wonders for releasing stress,” Nina says, sounding completely serious, but I can see a twinkle of mischief in her eyes.
“I like that pink thong very much. You’ll wear it for me tonight,” he says and kisses me.
“Stop ogling my chief of security, Nina,” he says in my ear. I cock an eyebrow and smile. “Sure, honey.”
or maybe it’s the way he deliberately caresses the skin around my ankle every single time.
“No lamps.” I hear Roman’s deep voice coming directly from above me, but I just smile and continue, keeping my eyes closed.
He nods, his face a perfect mask of politeness, but there is no missing the evil glint in his eyes.
Everything seems so genuine that even I, knowing it’s all for show, find it hard not to believe in her act.
The sound of her voice is completely serious, her face a picture of perfect sincerity, but her eyes are laughing at me. I lean toward her. “Then we’ll burn them,” I say and kiss her.
and instead close my eyes and enjoy the feel of her hand running through my hair. The painkillers start to kick in, and I could probably get up and go back to my room or at least sit up, but instead, I stay in the same position and listen to Nina’s voice describing in great detail how the murder in the movie happened and drift away.
“One other thing. When Mikhail is around, try not to touch him by accident. He . . . doesn’t deal well with skin-to-skin contact.”
A huge bearded man in his sixties, wearing a white chef’s apron and a bandanna over his head, is standing with his hands on his hips and shouting what I assume are Russian obscenities.
and Igor beams. He jumps from his chair babbling something and motioning with his hand. I follow him toward the kitchen island where he puts an apron over my head and starts taking out some ingredients from the cupboard. I turn to look over my shoulder at Varya, hoping she’ll tell me what’s going on, but she just laughs and shakes her head.
“Because I will silence them, Leonid. The same way I silenced my father.” I cock my head to the side. “Do you remember that night?” He tenses and doesn’t say anything, but I notice the vein pulsing in his neck. Yes, he remembers that night very well.
“Igor speaks only Russian. How can he teach her anything?” “I have no idea. He tells her what to do, and when she does it wrong, he yells.”
“No, Roman. She was mad because they didn’t leave any for you.”
It’s like the sun has suddenly broken through the dark clouds, hitting me with its warmth, and I find myself wishing this was real and not just an act.
She is so bloody cute when she’s mad. I lean forward and grab her around her waist with one arm, and under her knees with the other. Lifting her, I deposit her onto my lap.
She’s laughing like crazy along the way, with her face buried into my neck, and it feels so damn good.
“You’ll be sexy with the cane, Roman. Very aristocratic looking.” His eyes snap up to mine and his lips lift in a smile. “And I’m not sexy now?” Oh, you have no idea how much,
He reaches for me with his hand as if he is going to touch my face, but then reconsiders and turns away.
I am not a fan of Nina’s mother.
she is more concerned that I’m using a wheelchair than the fact her daughter married a stranger.
He knows very well who I am, and he still let his daughter marry me to save his own ass. What a pitiful excuse for a human being.
“Yes.” I nod and kiss her, then seeing the way her mother is watching us, I add, “Put on something sexy and wait for me. I won’t be long.”
Not this time. Looks like Roman not only managed to mess up my head but also my creative process.
