“You’re always taking care of everything and everyone. Let me take a turn.” The smile falls from her face, her lips almost forming a frown. “You shouldn’t say things like that.” I stare down at her, confused. She must see it too, because she murmurs, “It makes it very hard to stay away from you.”

Her soft laugh fills all the empty spots in my chest, and I think to myself that I could listen to her forever.

Ellie’s face brightens, and in that moment, my heart stops in my chest. With the lights from the tree reflecting on her skin, her dark eyes sparkling, and a smile forming on her perfect lips, she is absolutely beautiful.
