“I heard something.” “Don’t worry. If they know what’s good for them, they’ll eat me first.” He doesn’t so much as open his eyes.

It isn’t like I’m going to be able to sleep anyway, so I’ll just try not to freeze to death tonight. Goals: they’re important.

“Try to look happier. You’re standing in front of a gorgeous view, and you look like you just shoved someone over the ledge.”

“I get it. You’re a dude and you couldn’t help it. I think you’re the worst. You think I’m the worst. Your dick just didn’t get the memo.”

“No. I just want to lie here until I die.” “Don’t die on me. Then who would I fight with?” “I’m sure you piss off lots of people on any given day. Pick one.”

“Contrary to what you think, Vi, I care about you. If I thought you needed something, I’d do a lot more than kick down a door to get to you.”

“Get some sleep, Vi. I’ll be in yelling distance.” Her eyes fall closed, but a hint of a smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. “Just the way I like you,” she says. “Where I can yell at you, I mean.” “That’s the way I like it too.”

“Are you going to be okay?” “I’m fine.” He’s lying. “Try again.” He smiles; a real smile that makes me hate his dad’s fake one even more. “I’m pissed right now, but I will be fine.” “Better.” I tip my head toward the door. Another hour or two and we’ll both be free. “Shall we?”

When I get back to the table, her smile gets bigger and slightly taunting. “Congrats on being top jock.” “Top Jock? Is that like king of the dipshits?” “You said it.” “Thanks.” I laugh

“Kiss me.” My head snaps up. “What?” “Kiss me again.” My mouth opens to ask a whole bunch of questions, but I turn off my brain. When a hot girl asks you to kiss her, you fucking kiss her and you kiss her good.

I’m not sure which of us pulls back first, but we’re both out of breath. Woah. She unbuckles and opens the door. I’m still struggling to get brain function back when she says, “No, Gavin. I don’t think you and I can ever be friends.”

She stands and walks to the door. “Hey,” I call after her, “thank you.” “For what?” “Always having my back.” She smiles. “Always.”

If I keep staring at her like this, she’s going to yell at me for being creepy again, but I just can’t help it. She’s so fucking gorgeous, and she’s here with me. I don’t want to blink and miss a second of it.

“What are you doing over there?” The awful sound happens again and then the bed scoots into view. Gavin pops up a second later, grinning as he checks the position, pushes it some more, and then he lies on the bed and picks up the phone. “There.” “You did not just move your bed, so you can stare creepily into my room while I sleep.” “Oh, I so did. It’s pretty awesome. Want me to come over and move yours?”

I want to let down my guard completely, but then I have these moments of panic that I’m about to willingly fling myself off the ledge of a cliff and he won’t be there to catch me.

“I forgot how big you are,” Violet says, voice trembling. “I love it when you whisper sweet nothings.” She laughs. “That was sweet?” “Straight out of Jane Austen. I’m thinking of hanging it above my bed.” I grin down at her. “I don’t think so.”
