Vivek Murthy, surgeon general of the United States under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, wrote in the Harvard Business Review in 2017, “During my years caring for patients, the most common pathology I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness.”
But it is also evident in the things that draw and drive us as adults, above all our loves: the pursuits that the Greeks called philia (friendship and kinship) and eros (sex and romance), and to which the first Christians added agapē (self-giving and sacrifice).
