The mafia wasn’t about love—it was all business.
Why fight for a place where you aren’t wanted when you can create your own?
I wanted to hear his voice—needed to know if it was deep or raspy, maybe both.
Having confidence meant nothing in this world, but what you could do with it? That meant everything.
“My self-worth is worth more than any title; treating me with respect is enough.”
“Not being what people expect is my specialty,”
The problem was… she was more than beautiful. Lucia’s lips were full and painted a deep red color; her eyes were large and dark and lined dramatically. I wasn’t sure if she was trying to hide something behind the dramatics of her eye makeup, but it only made me take another long hard look. There were stories no one had ever heard in them, deep shadows that were wary of the people in this world. Wary of me.
“If someone tried to kill my husband or a member of his family, let alone mine, I’d have a problem with that. Which makes me a problem for them.”
“I’m not in the business of controlling a woman and her desires.”
“Loyalty should never be a question when it comes to me.”
“And unless you want to be bent over before our wedding night, then I suggest you keep your distance as much as possible.”
This marriage was meant to be in name only—a union to secure more power between our respective families. To be feeling something—whatever this was—before we said “I do” was not normal. Nothing about what had transpired was ordinary.
“A vengeful man never truly gets what he wants, and if by some miracle he does, its glory only lasts a short while. But a man who moves smart, with his head on straight and eyes clear of all haze, will always come out on top.”
“Mmm,” she hummed, her lips curving. “There’s something magical about having a man indebted to me.”
“You wore the perfume,” he said, brushing his nose up against my neck and awakening a primal side of me. “I like when you listen, bellissima.”
His lips on mine made the world fall away. His lips on mine were becoming my kryptonite.
He had no idea what he’d just done to me. To my stupid heart.
You're a woman who shouldn't settle for anything less." I kept playing, making her grind brazenly against just the one finger I gave her access to. "And I'm more than happy to give that to you."
“I want you to say the word when I ask. If I’m going to be reckless for you, let me go all the fucking way.”
“You don’t get to run this show, baby,” I told her, taking her hands and looping the belt around them. “And you know how much I love it when you take charge…” I tightened the leather until it dug into her skin. “Now we both have to suffer.”
“Sometimes not proceeding at all is the best plan of action,”
“I’d be glad to fuck that anger out of you, but we need to address a few things first.”
As if choosing her seemed absurd, but if she thought otherwise, then she truly had no idea the impact she had on me. How the love I felt for her was more important and without my Queen, this life would be colorless. Pointless. Dull.
I loved when he spoke violence, but in that soft cadence he used when only speaking to me.
