There are several stories of how the hand drum came to the Cree, or to the Anishinaabe, or to whomever is telling the story. The story I learned is about a mother and daughter who were very close. They spent all their time together, gathering medicines and singing and taking care of each other and their community. The daughter died. The mother was inconsolable.
