Her eyes were alight with merriment. “Oh,” she said, “I am so glad you stayed. I would not have missed that for worlds. It was priceless! You were priceless.” She came hurrying toward him as she spoke, both her hands outstretched. He took them in his own and squeezed them tightly. “I confess,” he said, “that I rather enjoyed it myself.”
He did not take his eyes off her. Partly it was deliberate, for the sake of her friends and neighbors, who were watching them with fond attention. Partly it was because she was good to look at—tall, slender, pretty whenever she was animated, as she was now. And partly because he knew that after tomorrow he would try to remember what she looked like and not always succeed. Yet she would always be his wife.
“I do not believe this is a wise choice, ma’am,” he said. “Then,” she said with a stubborn, potentially dangerous lift of her chin, “you are going to have to use your husband’s prerogative, Colonel, and order me back home. Please do it, and then I will have the pleasure of openly defying you. Will you call a hackney coach, or shall I?”
“Her Majesty leaned forward and asked me for whom I wore mourning,” she explained, “and I told her it was for my brother, who fell in action at the Battle of Toulouse. She smiled very kindly at me and commended me for putting love of my family before any temptation to wear pretty clothes into her presence.”
“Thank you,” she said, “but I believe I will be able to entertain myself quite well without your assistance, Colonel. Your aunt has already accepted several invitations on my behalf and will accompany me. I need not trouble you.” “Damn you, Eve,” he said softly and fiercely after a few tense, hostile moments of silence. “Damn you.”
“Eve,” he said, “I have sometimes spoken with irritation and even contempt of your lame ducks. I am sorry about that. I honor your generosity and your love for all creatures, no matter their looks or their station in life or their history. Knowing you has been a humbling experience. I thank you for it.”
