Sometimes, what doesn’t kill you simply doesn’t kill you, and you spend all your time wishing it had.

How many bad things could happen to a person? Wasn’t there some kind of limit on the number of traumatic events you could experience in a lifetime? The universe needed to back off and leave us alone.

They took one look at you and penetrated your soul. No wonder he was a detective.

You want to know what’s going on in a teenager’s life?” He cocked his head to the side and raised his eyebrows. “Look in their phone.”

“You’re not equipped to go from nothing bad ever happening to you to the worst thing that could possibly occur happening to you. It’s like being hurled into the deep end of a pool when you don’t know how to swim. That’s what it feels like. And all of it is dark. As if every light in the universe has been turned off.”

I try not to smile.

I just want to remind you that what the two of you went through was incredibly traumatic, and people that go through traumatic events together often develop a strong bond. It’s incredibly powerful.”
