‘Very well, Shen Lo.’ She narrowed her eyes at him. ‘But if I fall to my death, I promise you my spirit won’t linger in that forest. It will haunt you until the end of your days, and then when you die, I will berate you until the end of time itself.’
‘Sometimes love can be a curse,’ said Wren. ‘It can be prison. Or a death sentence.’
both of them pretending as if they hadn’t been looking for each other.
‘Forgive me. You make me forget myself,’ he said, deftly untangling her legs from around his waist.
‘I leave you for ten minutes and the next thing I know you’re undressing the enemy!’
‘Bananas?’ Celeste arched an eyebrow. ‘What do you know of men’s bananas, Rose?’ Rose burst into a fit of giggles. ‘You have a filthy mind, Celeste Pegasi!’ she said, swatting her arm. ‘I just mean that my feelings for Shen are real. Really real.’
She didn’t know if she wanted to kiss that smirk or slap it off his face. ‘Please.’
He trailed his fingers down her wrist, gently pressing his thumb against her racing pulse. ‘Forgive me for thinking there was something between us, Wren. I must have misread your moans.’ She swallowed, thickly. ‘You must have.’ ‘Liar,’ he whispered.
‘Wren is my closest friend. I’ll always look out for her and I know she’ll do the same for me, but there’s no spark between us. There never has been. But you, Rose …’ He paused, tilting her chin up so she was looking directly into his eyes. ‘You set me on fire.’
‘Please stop showing off,’ said Rose, in alarm. ‘You’re going to start a war.’ ‘I think it’s a bit late to worry about that.’ Shen curled an arm around her waist. ‘You look beautiful, by the way. Is it bad luck to kiss the bride?’ Without breaking her gaze he used his free hand to punch another advancing Gevran. ‘On second thoughts, I don’t care.’ Then he dipped Rose and kissed her.
