Arriving home, my mind was ready to shut off totally for a bit and I showered quickly before changing into a pair of cotton shorts and a shirt covered in cartoons. Armed with my blanket in one hand, Huck in the other, I made a quick stop in my playroom to grab a sippy cup and a few coloring books and a box of crayons, then headed toward the kitchen. When I settled onto the floor in front of the coffee table, the adult world was already slipping away. I set the alarm on my phone so I didn’t lose track of time, then let myself forget the rest of the world. Coloring, cartoons, and my snack were a lot more interesting than Brax, the game that night, or Seth and Maz’s offer. I must have been more stressed than I’d led myself to believe because I barely made it through one show before my eyes got too heavy to fight any longer. My bed felt very far away, so I tidied my coloring supplies, placed the snack plate on top of them, turned the TV off, and climbed onto the couch with my blanket, cup, and Huck. There was enough of a chill in the air that I pulled the big blanket from the back of the couch over me, stuck my cup in my mouth, and let my eyes close. My alarm startled me awake sometime later, leaving me disoriented for a few seconds.
